Belgium: the Huy lock site gets modernized

In Belgium, in Liège more precisely, the lock site of Huy is under construction. The lock of Ampsin-Neuville will be modified to allow, in 2023, the passage of the large boats. Investment amount : € 150 million.

Under the guidance of the contracting authority Sofico and the prime contractor of the Waterways Directorate of the Wallonia Public Service, the contract will be awarded as from June 2017. The rehabilitation work will start in September 2017 and will continue until May 2023. Thus modified, the lock of Ampsin-Neuville will be able to accommodate barges of 9 000 t.

Work will focus on replacing the small by a medium capacity lock. The lock of greater capacity will be kept in operation. When the new lock is completed, the second will be destroyed replacing then by a large capacity lock, DH.be explains.

At the same time, the "ecological and road" environment of the Huy locks site will be completely redesigned.
