Subway in Doha: 111 km in 26 months!

The tunnel boring machine Herrenknecht with 7 meters long, has completed the drilling of the Red Line South. This is the last of the 76 drillings of the tunnel construction in the subway project in Doha, realized by 21 tunnel boring machines in Qatar.

This drilling – celebrated on last September 25 - marks an end of the construction of one of the most ambitious subway networks in the world. Orchestrated by Qatar Rail, the project has 26 months to be completed in Doha. It is appeared in the form of 3 subway lines with a total length of 111 km. 2.5 km were dug weekly, which presents in itself a record dully registered by the Guinness Book of Records.

From August 2014 to September 2016, on the 3 main lines (Red Line, Green Line and Gold Line) 4 international groups have commissioning 21 tunnel boring machines, designed and equipped by Herrenknecht for this project, dedicated particularly for implementing 470 467 voussoirs constituting 70,071 concrete rings. At rush hours, 20 tunnel boring machines dug simultaneously.

In Doha, the first line of the subway will come into service in 2020 and then in 2026, the second line will be commissioning as well as 72 additional stations.
