USA: Keystone XL oil pipeline brought back to life

The controversial 1,900 km long Keystone XL pipeline is expected to receive the authorities’ go-ahead in the next few hours from the current administration.

It was rejected before in order not to jeopardize what is seen as the American leadership on climate control. The current administration has made it a priority for what it sees as a potential source of job creation and energy independence.

The Keystone XL will link Alberta (Canada) oil sands to the Gulf of Mexico refineries and harbors, thus conveying more than 800,000 barrels per day of heavy oil via an existing pipeline network. Today, the building permit should be approved by the US State Department after nearly ten years of delay.
