South Carolina: When Volvo CE Stays in the Family

In South Carolina, Landmark Construction was surrounded by 30 Volvo CE machines to build the first Volvo Car production plant in the United States.

The picturesque seaside town of Charleston, in South Carolina, buzzes with the arrival of a newcomer, and with it, a potential for economic growth that goes beyond the borders of the state. Attracted by the growing demand in the United States, Volvo Cars decided to build its first US production plant on a 293,80 ha site for € 60.5 million. After the deforestation initiated in July 2015, Volvo Cars hopes to release its first car from the production lines by the end of 2018.

Project divided into 5 phases, the construction of the plant was entrusted to Landmark Construction assisted by 30 Volvo machines supplied by the dealer ASC Construction Equipment. The fleet includes EC380E and EC480E excavators as well as articulated haulers A40G. These are used for loading and transporting excavated soil during earthworks, while EC380E is used for digging basin, dewatering storm water and final work. During the period of high demand, Landmark Construction was able to dig 76.45 m3 per day. A Volvo articulated hauler A25 equipped with a spreader is used for laying cement before compaction.

Once completed, the plant will be able to produce 100,000 cars per year and will generate an annual wealth of € 4.2 billion.
