Belgium: European Investment Bank (EIB) promotes rail transport

The EIB, the major lender in the world, provided a 600 million euros loan to the SNCB, the Belgian National Railway Company, to renew its train fleet.

The SNCB had already benefited from 200 million euros in December 2016. The second part of the loan (400 million euros) has just been signed. This funding will allow the company to honor the order it placed to Bombardier-Alstom regarding 445 double-decker M7 railcars.

New trains, which will be on track from September 2018, will be more comfortable for passengers and will offer more seats. They will also integrate the latest technology in terms of safety as they will be equipped with European Train Control System (ETCS).

And this is precisely what is at stake here: ensuring high-quality and expanded service to foster the use of railways in Belgium and the surrounding countries. The top priority of the EIB is indeed to reverse climate change, and encouraging people to take the train instead of their car is part of it.
