Bertha, the world’s largest tunnel-boring machine has resumed digging the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Tunnel on February 23, 2017, a two-mile tunnel underneath downtown Seattle from the SoDo neighborhood to South Lake Union in the north.
The machine is expected to finish boring in 2019. The $80 million tunnel boring machine named Bertha was created for this project by Hitachi Zosen Corporation near Osaka, Japan.
